People who want to learn more about fashion, because fashion is an interesting topic to talk about, tend to ask these questions:
- How did fashion start?
- Why does fashion change?
- What events changed fashion in the last decades?
Fashion started when human beings started wearing clothes, and that is as far as anyone can remember. But then when we talk about why fashion changes, it is simply because people change. People tend to be influenced by popular and trendy things like clothing from popular films, celebrities, TV, fashion shows and magazines. Like back in 17th century, people could spend hours looking through magazines for the popular and latest clothing.
Events does have phenomenal effects on fashion. In the 1930s, due to the great depression, clothing became more modest thus reflective of the difficult financial situation of the decade. Even the woman hairstyles changed into a modest perm.
The 1940s saw many fashion outlets in Paris close due to the World War 2, because the Germans took possession of the French including the fashion world, so that the only evolution noticed was on hairstyles as the permed hairstyles now evolved into a bob.
The 1950s, due to the media recognition, brought the birth of a lot of fashion designers because a lot of actors would wear most of their work. The straight-legged pants and shirts with long pointed collars, often worn hanging rather than tucked in were seen among men while women’s clothing were mostly knee-length skirts and dresses, hats with veils and long coats. The permed hairstyles were still in style.
60s fashion saw some kind of retro clothing as the 20s fashion was seen in the fashion world. Clothing were less modest, knee-length skirts became shorter, thus making mini-skirts popular in the 1965. Hats which was popular in the last two decades began to decline and also the hairstyles had more assortment not just restricted to perm.
Italian fashion and designers had some significance in 1970s, because their clothing were luxurious and easy to wear. They were even some sort of the 20s fashion in the fashion world of that decade.
The 1980s saw the birth of sport wears, even the sport label Adidas rose to serious recognition in that decade due to their choice of clothing materials. Jumpsuits also became popular amongst women even hairstyles also changed.
Retro clothing of the 60s and 70s were appreciated in the 90s. Most designers birthed in earlier decades revamped their styles and came back to limelight like the Michael Kors and Prada. Also, due to the popularity of hip-hop in that decade, baggy jeans, big shirts, heavy shoes and large jewelry were seen. Nike also become popular and also the fashion power house Chanel, because of their fashion materials which was influenced by activist topics like body modifications, animal rights, rape etc.
We are looking forward to fashion designs, styles, modifications etc. Because people now tend to break all the fashion rules and just wear whatever they want. Wear your own style today, who knows you might be the next fashion icon!
