The Olympic Games first started in Olympia, Greece, in honor of the Greek god, Zeus. It is considered as the most important sport competition in the world, with more than 200 countries in participation. It is held every four years and consists of over 35 sports, 30 disciplines and 408 events.
Did you know that; in the first Olympics held in 776BCE, the male athletes were completely “naked” as they participated in the 200 meter race? Bet you didn’t know that!
In a bid avoid an eyesore, clothing known as sportswear or activewear was introduced and modified to match different purposes and specifications and can also be worn as casual wears.
Choosing fabrics for the production of sportswear isn’t quite easy, as a lot of factors must be put into consideration. In hot condition or sports that may cause one to perspire, fabrics chosen must enable the wearer to stay cool and vice versa. A good example of a moisture absorbent fabric is Spandex.
One of the best sportswear brand that has made a name in the world and of course in the Olympics clothing is Nike, this because they focus on design innovation, technical performance materials, sustainability, individual taste, ethnicity and also making nice casual wears in the long run. Sportswear in the Olympics has to be made specifically for different types of sport events e.g. sportswear for Cycling should not be too bulky or tight as to enable the quick movements of the cyclist. Also sport events like Martial arts, rugby, ice hockey etc. should have protective gears assigned to them.
Sportswear brands which has made the Tokyo 2020 Olympics stylish are: Adidas, Telfar, Skims (the Kim Kardashian brand), Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, and a host of other amazing sportswear brands.
